Question 1:
When I started this class, I wasn't very comfortable with art criticism. I thought it was rude to tell myself or others what I thought about their artwork or what they could've done differently. I knew that some people work as an art critic but I still didn't like it. I now think of art criticism as a helpful insight that everyone needs. Knowing the opinion of other artist is critical in the outcome of a piece. Personally, when I am making artwork, I try thinking rounded. By that I mean, I try to see what others would see when they take a first glance at my artwork. Then when other people do see my work and give me feedback, I listen to what they have to say and take it all into consideration. I think the best part about art criticism is that only the artist can decide on what to change. Some criticism I will listen to and change my work, but if there is an aspect that I like, I most likely will not change that aspect. This is because even though art criticism is helpful, I like to make my artwork for myself. At some point in my life I may have to make artwork for an audience but for right now I like to create what I want. In my artwork below, several people told me to add color. I contemplated it for a while but I really enjoyed the simplicity of the black and white. I also thought that the patterns were already enough. I didn't see the criticism as judgmental, and even if I didn't change my artwork, it was helpful.

Question 2:
Art 1 was new for me. I had never taken an art class or anything like it in middle or high school. It was a good type of new, I made new friends, got to explore, and relax. I think the most helpful thing I learned this semester didn't involve anything using my hands or a paintbrush. The most useful skill I learned was being able to figure out myself and dig deep inside my creativity and think of how I could represent myself on the given topic. There was times where thinking of a project was hard and I just made something to get a grade. Other projects I knew instantly what I wanted to make and I loved the outcome. This is what made this semester so fun. I wouldn't change anything about it, there's nothing I can even think to change. I made three new friends, I got to spend time eating and talking, and most importantly I got to discover how I could express myself thru art. This is an invaluable experience I am so glad I was able to have. Below are some of my favorite pieces I made this semester and will always treasure.

The plaster mold I made above was probably my favorite piece I made this semester. Even though these are unfinished pictures, it was the experience I liked. Some people may be intimidated by putting plaster on their face but I thought it was a new opportunity. I think it would be fun to do something similar in the future but using something other than my face.
